Western Illinois University’s University Union Board or UUB, as it is known around campus, is gearing up for a special night. UUB events aim to give students something safe and fun to do, typically on weekends. Plus, with free admission for students, what’s not to like? During the semester, I look forward to the different opportunities the UUB provides for me to relax and hang out with friends for a few hours. This Friday November 15th 8:00PM-12:00PM, the UUB will be sponsoring the Wild Wild West Fest, the name is quite creative if I do say so myself.
University Union Board President Ronnie Robertson shared details with me about the upcoming special UUB event. “I took on the task of picking the theme…It just hit me one day; we go to Western…the Wild West…Hey now! It just seemed to fit,” said Robertson. Themes for the events are usually picked in a more traditional manner such as voting among students, but this event’s theme really does “just seem to fit” as Robertson put it.
The Wild Wild West Fest will include a scavenger hunt, free caricatures, a mini cactus giveaway, and even live music. “We will be showing the Wild Wild West with (actor) Will Smith,” said Corin Bodenhamer, who is UUB’s Cinema Chair and is in charge of selecting films to show during events. She also selected the outdoor movie earlier in the semester which was the Great Gatsby. The Wild Wild West movie is a great pick and immensely follows along with the theme for the night.
UUB’s special late night affairs are usually well attended and well publicized on campus. It is not uncommon to hear chatter about UUB’s upcoming events on the Go West busses or even in passing groups of people in the hallways. “Our events are overall well attended and usually exceed our expectations,” said Robertson. It is almost 100% guaranteed that you will laugh and enjoy loads of free activities at UUB events. In my opinion they are well worth attending.
UUB is also sponsoring a concert tonight. The group Love and Theft will be appearing in the Union Grand Ballroom. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at the Hainline Theatre or at the door. This is sure to be a busy week for the UUB.
By the end of the year, the UUB wants to change things up a bit. Every year they sponsor a week titled The Best Week Ever, in which every day there is a different event to attend. “Our goal for this semester is to open The Best Week Ever to get all organizations campus wide involved,” said Robertson. It will be interesting to see how this goal pans out since the UUB has a record of putting on some great events. I guess we will just have to wait and see!
