Alumni, Are You Ready?! Homecoming 2013 is HERE!

As exciting as Homecoming is for students, it seems like it is a more meaningful event for alumni. It not only presents a chance for alumni to come back to campus and reminisce over past experiences, but it also provides a chance to see all the changes on campus since they last visited. Alumni Programs has been gearing up for Homecoming 2013 for quite some time now. My supervisor and Alumni Programs Associate Director Amanda Shoemaker expressed her excitement for this special weekend.

“The Alumni Programs staff works throughout the year to make the weekend fun, exciting, and reminiscent” stated Shoemaker.  Alumni Programs has an electrifying schedule set up not only for alumni, but also for the friends and family of alumni. There will be something to do at almost any given moment this weekend. The schedule of events can be found on the WIU Alumni web site at http://www.wiu.edu/alumni/homecoming.php.

This year’s Homecoming theme is “The Rocky Games: Western Is United.” “Each year the theme is picked by a panel of six or seven people, and this year’s theme was picked to play off of the recent Hunger Games movies,” shared University Union Board President Ronnie Robertson. The theme puts an edge of giddiness over the Homecoming experience.

This year, the special emphasis will be given to the classes celebrating their 25th, 40th, 50th, and 60th anniversaries of crossing the commencement stage at Western Illinois University and moving into the next chapter of life. These classes will be recognized at the Reunion brunch tomorrow morning.

Throughout all of the Homecoming Weekend Events, it will not be unlikely for alumni to spot WIU President, Dr. Jack Thomas. He is always in the midst of all the Homecoming excitement and is eager to meet with students as well as alumni. You might even be able to find him around the Alumni House along with many others. “The front lawn of the Alumni House is usually jam packed; it’s a favorite place to watch the parade,” said Shoemaker.

“If the alumni walk away with having had a fun time or reconnecting with an old friend, we have done our job,” expressed Shoemaker. With that being said, what are you most looking forward to this weekend? Comment below!
